Ingredients
2 cans strawberry pie filling
1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
8 ounces cream cheese, cubed
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 box yellow cake mix
3/4 cup unsalted butter, thinly sliced
1 cup whipped cream, for serving
1 tablespoon powdered sugar, optional for garnish
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Spread the strawberry pie filling evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
3. Scatter the sliced fresh strawberries over the filling, then sprinkle with granulated sugar and vanilla extract.
4. Dot the cubed cream cheese evenly over the strawberry layer.
5. Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the top without stirring.
6. Arrange the thin butter slices over the cake mix, covering as much of the surface as possible.
7. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the strawberry filling is bubbling around the edges.
8. Let the cake rest for 15 minutes before serving.
9. Serve warm with whipped cream and a light dusting of powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
Avoid leaving large dry patches of cake mix on top. Slice the butter thinly and spread it evenly over the surface so the topping bakes golden instead of powdery.
