Description

Delicious Char Siu Chicken is a sticky, glossy, flavor-packed easy dinner made with tender chicken, hoisin sauce, honey, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and warm spices. This quick chicken recipe is perfect for weeknight dinner ideas, Asian-inspired food ideas, meal prep bowls, rice bowls, lettuce wraps, and a simple homemade takeout-style dinner that tastes bold, sweet, savory, and beautifully caramelized.

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs

1/3 cup hoisin sauce

3 tablespoons soy sauce

2 tablespoons honey

2 tablespoons brown sugar

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

1 tablespoon rice vinegar

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1/2 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder

1/4 teaspoon red food coloring, optional

2 green onions, sliced

1 teaspoon sesame seeds, optional

Instructions

1. Pat the chicken dry and trim any excess fat.

2. In a bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, rice vinegar, sesame oil, Chinese five-spice powder, and optional red food coloring.

3. Reserve 3 tablespoons of the marinade in a clean bowl for glazing later.

4. Add the chicken to the remaining marinade, coat well, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.

5. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with foil or parchment.

6. Arrange the chicken on the pan with space between each piece.

7. Bake for 20 minutes, then brush with the reserved clean glaze.

8. Continue baking for 8 to 12 minutes, or until the chicken reaches 165°F internally.

9. Broil for 1 to 3 minutes to caramelize the edges, watching closely so the glaze does not burn.

10. Rest for 5 minutes, slice, and garnish with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

Do not skip reserving a clean portion of the marinade before adding the raw chicken. Brushing cooked chicken with used marinade can be unsafe unless it has been boiled first, and using a clean glaze also gives the chicken a fresher, shinier finish.
