Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
0.5 cup cocoa powder (Dutch-process preferred)
0.5 cup granulated sugar
0.5 cup brown sugar
0.5 teaspoon baking soda
0.25 teaspoon salt
0.5 cup unsweetened applesauce
0.25 cup neutral oil (canola or avocado)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
0.25 cup non-dairy milk (almond or oat)
0.5 cup vegan chocolate chips or chunks (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt.
3. In another bowl, stir together applesauce, oil, vanilla, and non-dairy milk.
4. Pour wet mixture into dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
5. Fold in vegan chocolate chips or chunks if using.
6. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan and bake for 30–35 minutes, or until edges are set and a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs.
7. Allow brownies to cool in the pan for 15–20 minutes, then slice and serve.
Notes
Don’t overbake—brownies should be set on the edges but soft in the center.
Swap applesauce with mashed banana or vegan yogurt if needed.
Add nuts or swirl in peanut butter for variation.
