Creamy Baked Onions with Asiago Cheese is a rich and cozy dish that transforms ordinary onions into an indulgent centerpiece. Soft, sweet roasted onions are layered in garlicky herb butter and smothered in Asiago cheese and cream, then baked to bubbling golden perfection. Whether you’re looking for quick dinner ideas, a comforting side dish, or an easy recipe for a holiday table, this dish delivers both flavor and elegance. It’s ideal for vegetarians and perfect for pairing with grilled meats or hearty grains. If you love creative food ideas, don’t miss this cheesy, savory delight.

Ingredients

4 large yellow or sweet onions

1 cup heavy cream

1 ½ cups shredded Asiago cheese

2 tablespoons butter

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon fresh thyme or ½ teaspoon dried herbs

½ teaspoon salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

1. Peel and trim the onions, then slice them in half horizontally or leave whole if small. Blanch in boiling water for 4–5 minutes to soften.

2. In a saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the garlic until fragrant. Stir in the thyme or herbs.

3. Arrange onions cut-side up in a greased baking dish. Drizzle with garlic herb butter and pour heavy cream around the onions.

4. Sprinkle Asiago cheese over the onions, adding Parmesan on top if desired.

5. Bake at 375°F (190°C) uncovered for 35–40 minutes until onions are tender and tops are golden. Broil for 2–3 minutes if more browning is desired.

6. Serve hot as a side dish or vegetarian entrée.

Notes

Use Vidalia or yellow onions for best sweetness and caramelization.

Make ahead by assembling the dish a day early and baking just before serving.

Customize with Gruyère or Fontina cheese for a twist on flavor.
